Last night I watched Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, directed and starring Kenneth Branagh. Robert De Niro is billed at the star, but it seems all Branagh's show.
I saw this many years ago and didn't like it. After seeing it again, I still don't like it. There's so much promise in this movie it upsets me that it turns out bad. I love Frankenstein and to have De Niro play Frankenstein's monster sounds like an amazing idea. And De Niro is pretty good in the movie. He brought a human quality to it, both good and evil aspects. It's a shame he's not in the movie much. I would have loved more scenes where Dr. Frankenstein sits and talks with his monster. What I'd like would stray from Mary Shelly's novel, but this movie needed something. Branagh's performance is okay, but there are times when nothing really makes sense. For example, right after he's worked so hard to create life, he quickly, without any explanation, changes his mind and wants his monster dead. Why? Don't tell us, but show us. But I would have settled for a little telling. Find a way to illustrate the internal conflict we have to assume happened. Perhaps there were a lot of things shot but had to be edited out. The build up of Dr. Frankenstein was lengthy and very enjoyable. That made it hard to understand his sudden about face. The second half of the movie seemed short compared to the first. I don't want to sound like the movie is crap. It's not. The other actors all seemed believable and did their parts well. And another things that really bothered me is something I guess nitpicky, Branagh's beard. There was a lot of attention to detail in the movie but his beard. I find it hard to believe that through all the good times and bad times of Dr. Frankenstein that he had time to perfectly trim his beard, the likes of which look very... electric razor done. But what do I know? Right after I finished watching the movie, I turned the channel and started to watch Warlock starring Julian Sands and Lori Singer. I enjoyed Warlock more than Branagh's Frankenstein. "Hear me when I say he's evil." Wednesday, October 29, 2003
I was going to watch Rosemary's Baby, but the cable went out. And when the cable goes out, the only channel that shows is channel 10, which shows unusual religious shows. Oddly enough, Rosemary's Baby and the religious shows had the same plot... different endings.
Currently, I'm watching The Dunwich Horror, which is about the Necronomicron. I have an anime movie called Armitage III (not part three, read "The Third"). Armitage III is based on The Dunwich Horror, a Lovecraft story. The movie is... interesting. It doesn't suck and is something I'd watch again. Mainly for it's anti-hippie views. AMC has really out done themselves with movies this year for Halloween. I wish in the future they go a step further and show some things unedited after a certain time on certain days. Parents should be parents and not let their children watch an edited version of Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse. So why not show it unedited after 9 at night? Tuesday, October 28, 2003
When I awoke, I noticed my small boat was on dry ground, lodged between two rocks. I stood and searched for water, finding myself alone between a mountain and a valley. The sky above hung low and faint pink like blood in water. The trees, barren and burnt, smelled of fat on a fire.
After wandering, I found the edge of a river bed now just mud and dead fish. I found a flat rock stretching up to a point that followed the sun. Three words stood out from the rock. Lost. Mine. Go. I tried to carve a fourth word in the stone, but my fingers gave and bled. I forgot the word and wept. Night came, and the sky darkened to crimson. I found footsteps in the mud running away deeper into the valley. I turned back and saw a shape moving on the mountain, a desperate shadow clawing upward. It motioned for me to follow. I can not wait for this movie, Passions, to come out. Saturday, October 25, 2003
Three times...
I was doing some maintenance in XP, defraging and what not. I was moving a large file, 700 + megs, to a different drive. Three times XP gave me a blue screen. Uh oh! I thought the Blue Screen of Death was gone. Nope. Though, since I've gotten the new power supply, I haven't had any freeze ups. I'm sure I will, but things do seem better. I'm back to the normal things that mess my system up such as moving large files. XP or any M$ OS seems to take forever. I'm in Linux now. As I type this, Linux is moving the file. I just checked, it's done. It took less than a minute. I'm listening to the Icewind Dale soundtrack. I bought the special edition of Icewind Dale that included the first game, the second game, Icewind Dale II, the expansion pack, Hearts of Winter, a bonus CD with extra files and guides to Icewind Dale and Hearts of Winter, and the soundtrack. I am very pleased with the quality of the soundtrack. It is not just game music. It's the score written for the game performed by an orchestra. Classical music has a large section in my music collection. Soundscores are a part of that. Game music, for the most part, isn't. Maybe I should rethink that. Some of the best stories I've come across have been in games. I've seen some great art in games. Music comes along as well. Friday, October 24, 2003
The street seems busy tonight even for a Friday. On the way home, I saw a few different vehicles pulling into driveways that I usually don't see anybody pulling into.
I was over at friend's tonight. I took my guitar and amp over. We didn't get to play much together, not enough to my liking. But there were other things going on. I love the way we sound together. My friend used to have a Peavey Wolfgang. At first, this was an amazing guitar. Then it became evident that it's a one trick pony. You can do tricks on it, but there is no soul, no feeling, nothing human in it. Now he has a Jimmie Vaughan Strat, which sounds great. And I really do think we sound good together. Our guitars sound like family members. We need to play more. I haven't got around to downloading Mandrake 9.2 yet. I need to do that real soon. I'm thinking of reinstalling a clean version of XP but have nothing in it except the things I need to play games in it. When I reinstall anything M$, it nukes my bootsector, and I have go behind it and load Lilo. Lilo is a boot loader that lets me choose XP, Win 98, or Linux. M$ doesn't like it when you use more than one OS, even if they are M$'s. Lilo needs to be more graphical. M$, as much as I hate it, does have something going for it's "Loading Screen." It needs to be in a higher color depth and changeable naturally in XP. You need extra software to change it. And when M$ does a big update, you can accidentally render you computer unbootable, which I've done. But I wouldn't mind Lilo moving toward a more graphical menu. In Seven days... My favorite holiday. Then there's November Coming Fire... My birthday. I was born November 4th. Yesterday, my mother once again reminded me of my due date. She had to have a C-Section with me. I was due on October 31st. Thursday, October 23, 2003
I just finished re-greasing my heatsink on my computer. I wasn't really sure if it needed it or not. I'd read that thermal grease drying out really isn't that much of a probably. It can last months to years. Well, it's been a few years since I've upgraded my heatsink, which was when I last used thermal grease.
When I got the heatsink off, there didn't look to be any problems. The chip looked a bit purple, but once clean it looked coppery like it first did out of the box. And the copper ring that's part of my heatsink, looked dark except where it came in contact with the chip. I cleaned it as well, and it looks new again. It usually takes 72 hours of use for the thermal grease to set in and work as best as it can, or so I've read. But already, I've noticed a few good things. At idle, my CPU is 87 F. Before, it was about a 100 F. Hopefully in 72 hours, it'll either be better or the same. I'll take the same. One day, I'll be using water cooling for chips and things. I can't wait until I can stick my hand into something that usually gives me a good shock that will then have water running through it.
It only took a few hours for my computer not to boot. I got a new power supply today. I ordered a 450 watt and a got a 550 watt. Some may say that's lucky, but with all things computer related, they come with curses and inflections... especially to me.
A few years back, I had to replace a power supply that the fan had stopped in. When the fan stopped, it slowly burned inside. I ordered a new one. I put the new one in, connected everything, screwed every things in, turn the computer on, and the power supply caught fire. It took less than 60 seconds for me to unscrew that one and take it outside to finish burning. The company I ordered that one from was real cool and sent me a new one. Tonight, I left the power supply outside of the computer and tried it out first. It booted just fine. I put it, screwed everything in, attached everything again, and then my computer wouldn't boot. I had to disconnect everything and try everything one at a time. Everything's up and running now and has been for sometime. I need a Y connector thing. I'm one connector short and couldn't connect all my lighting. That's for tomorrow. I also need to check my thermal grease on my CPU heatsink. Ah, don't you just love things that could kill me if I touch them the wrong way? I need to write about the time I tried to adjust a fan while it was on and let my finger slip into my CPU fan. The blade went all the way to the bone and kicked my hand out of the computer. I saw blood in the air that looked like pink, chalk dust. Tuesday, October 21, 2003
Robert De Niro has prostate cancer. There's not a lot of things worse than cancer. Thankfully, the doctors believe he's going to be okay.
I watched the Raiders and the Chiefs play. The Raiders woke up late. How late? 17 to 10. 7 seconds ticking on the clock. A pass... a catch... on the 1 yard line. No time left. Game over. Gannon was injuried in the second half, and the backup quaterback didn't find a stride for a bit. And when he did, it was too late. There was even a poorly attempted fake spike. The Raiders are not doing so well this year. The Chiefs, on the over side of the coin, is now 7 and 0. I believe the only other undefeated team are the Vikings. These two teams need to get together. Witches' Voice - 20 October, 2003 - 2:17:36 AM
This is one of my favorite websites. Though I am a Christian, I have found a lot of comfort at this site and with the people who make up it's community. And since this is the season of "witchy things," I thought I'd post a good link to a good source of truth about such things. I've learned so much here about Wicca. CHARMED is not what it's about folks. Turn off the TV sometimes. 10 31
Hallows Eve: The Season of the Witch and the Six Turnings for the Dark Master of Elfhame
"Do We Love the Old Gods? Christians love the white Christ. Muslims love Allah. Buddhist devotees of Kuan Yin love her dearly. What about we of the Old Faith? What is the nature of our Relationship with the Great Spirits that gave us birth, life, and who encircle us in ever-new images? What about the Dark Master who becomes powerful in the Winter? He rides the land with his Yell-Hounds, hunting for lost souls, and the old legends tell us that it was a lethal danger to be caught in the nighted countryside alone when the Horned Master's Hunt rode by. And his Lady? The Queen of the Dead, whose embraces and kisses are death and mourning? The pale faced, red-lipped ghastly Mother who is circled by the groaning and cackling dead? Can we love such beings as these? How should we relate to them?" Go read! 10 31
The Horse Dealer
In an article on Witch Vox, I came across "The Bogies'll Get You..." and I did a Google search on it. The above link popped up. It's good reading. Go read. 10 31
You Call It Hallowe'en... We Call It Samhain
Here, you can learn what Halloween is and where it came from. Uh oh, it has nothing to do with Satan! "Samhain is a time to reflect our mortality, and to confront out fears of dying." 10 31 Sunday, October 19, 2003
It was my turn to mess things up. Tonight, I followed M$'s directions and ran Windows Update on the fresh computer my friend built for his wife. After downloading an awful lot of things, it came time to reboot... to an error message. There was to be no restoring to an earlier configuration or booting in safe mode. It was just error and then back from the abyss, a blue screen of death.
Google to the rescue. We found instructions on how to replace the messed up files using the XP prompt (aka ntfs prompt) you can get to using a XP disc. I'm pretty sure all M$ products are out to get me. They just are.
There is something strange on cable right now. Where channel 10 is supposed to be, there's a replay of the Notre Dame University of Southern California game from earlier today. I already know who won, USC. They ran over ND a few times, backed up, and ran over them again. The final score was 43 or 48 to 20 something. Still, I'm enjoying having it on in the background.
Tonight, my friend built his wife a new computer. When it came time to install XP, her files were erased. It wasn't his fault. And I won't even call it an accident. XP did it on purpose. Somewhere in the installation process, something wasn't clear or it took it upon itself to erase everything. Luckily, most of her files were backed up up, and what she didn't have, wouldn't be too hard to get again. Thanks to M$, I have learned to backup everything. Thanks guys. Today, I noticed M$ is running an infomercial on TechTV. In it, they detail how to protect your computer because they can't. If Tyson Foods allowed as many "worms" as M$ does, do you think Tyson Chicken would be legal? M$, on computers across the land, deals with more money than Tyson Foods. Thank God (or deity of choice) the military uses Apple computers when it can. Tomorrow, I'll be searching about for a server that has Linux Mandrake 9.2, which is coming out as I write this. By the end of October, it'll be wildly available. Right now, it's available for Mandrake Club members. I'm sure an iso or two will leak out to the rest of us. I'll just have to find it. Foggy. It is unbelievably foggy outside. A fern, backlit grey by the neighbor's floodlight, stretches high with drooping leaves dripping with sweaty rain. With the dulling fog, it makes me think of the jungles of lands long out of reach by everything but feet.
Down the road, Henry's gas station is almost hidden. A small smear of yellow blinks every now and then, the brightly lit welcoming sign promising milk and bread. Sometimes, the grey glows white in circles as cars inch by. And it is cold... cold like it has been for a long time, but it hasn't. This is not a night to travel. This is not a night for a lot of things. I wonder what was buried today, how fresh, how stale, how forgotten and hidden. Do things rot faster buried under rot, sour earth? Do they slow in false hope, speed in false race? Turning loose under the same noose, does the hanged man smile at the bite, at the long coming spite? Thursday, October 16, 2003
GNOME artwork
Here's where you go if you want some GNOME stuff. KDE-Look.org has lots of stuff that can be used in GNOME, and this site has some stuff that can be used with KDE. For example, I use GDM, that's part of GNOME, to log into my system, which uses KDE.
KDE-Look.org
Go here if you use Linux and KDE. Most folks know about this site, but when I first started using Linux, I had no clue where to go to get things for your desktop environment. I didn't even know what "desktop environment" meant.
Another long day. I haven't been able to blog as much as I've wanted to. My computer is having issues. I can only have it on for a short bit before... well, issues. I need a new power supply. One should be on it's way to me tomorrow. I'm going up to 450 Watts. If that's not enough, there's the big 550 just around the corner.
My next computer will start at 600 Watts. Why? My next computer will be... well, ever seen Tron? There will be a lot of stuff inside, hardware and modding. The mods will include several lights, both UV and neon. There will be several windows. And there's going to be a few things I haven't thought of. So 600 sounds safe right now. I'm still waiting for the 2004 Novel & Short Story Writer's Market to be released. I may need to check and see if I had the right release date on that one. I swear I read October. The month isn't over yet. There's still Halloween to look forward to. I was at my friend's tonight. I read a little note from their children's school. They're not allowed to celebrate Halloween at their school. I had to bit my tongue and not say things in front of their kids. But that really sucks. This is all thanks to right-wing Christians. These same folks fear Harry Potter will send little boys and girls to Hell. Majority rules right? If 51 people out of 100 are Christians, then no Halloween and only Christmas for you, right? There's also no Hanukkah celebration either. No Wiccans. No Muslims. No Jews. Pick up that cross, boy and join the ranks or get pushed down beneath our feet. Don't you know the pledge of allegiance? Don't you read our money, our golden calf? Love thy neighbor but if he believes differently... Tuesday, October 14, 2003
Long day today. I designed a site for a friend. I did it all in just a few hours. He doesn't know it yet. Later today, after some sleep, I'll find out if everything is okay with what I've done.
I just saw a commerical for Family Fear Factor. A mother was telling her daughter not to cry. What great TV! I think I want a tattoo. To get one, I'll have to get in better shape. There's nothing like working out to have a better body so you can mar it with a tattoo. I'd like on my back a tattoo as if I had wings and they were ripped off. Then maybe an angel tattoo on my arm, something like an angel chewing gum or playing canasta. Seriously, it'd be an angel, but like a sad angel on one arm and maybe a happy one on the other arm. Maybe. We'll see. Monday, October 13, 2003
I just finished watching Scent of a Woman. Now I'm going to watch Devil's Advocate. The connection: Pacino. I need to watch Donnie Brasco and Any Given Sunday.
My favorite Pacino movie is either Serpico or Dog Day Afternoon. When Pacino is good, he's beyond great.
Ever just have the same bad day over and over? And then you have it again? And everybody walks around like it's the norm because it's happened so many times?
... I'm watching Scare Tactics. I love this show even though it's technically a reality TV show. Sometimes, they stop just short of how far they need to go on Scare Tactics. And sometimes they go a bit too far. Somebody will end up dead on the show. I miss MTV's Fear. I loved that show as well, even if it seemed a little fake at times. There are a few places around here that are scary, abandoned houses, factors, hospitals, mental institutions, nursing homes, and etc. The nursing homes have to be the worst. One day I plan to buy one of these places and fix it up, but not what you think. I plan to turn it into a nice little haunted place. People can come and stay a night or a few days. If you stay the whole time, you get some of your money back. If you want to leave early, I get to keep it all. Sunday, October 12, 2003
I just got home from a friend's house. While there, we watched The Ghost and the Darkness and discussed the two lions and Michael Douglas. Then we talked about a lot of things, most of which won't be mentioned here. I do want to mentioned some things that were talked about, a good bit happening outside under the stars.
Bettie Page is sexy. They peal your face down when you die to have better access to your skull. Knee-high socks are sexy. Forensics are interesting. Jennifer Tilly is sexy. And then we talked of some of my writings... the ones that make me feel... well, not so good. "Mags." "Angel Of." "Testify." These are three short stories that are set in a very different world. It's gray, dark, almost lifeless. Angels run everything. And they don't block you from worshiping Jesus, you're just forgetting about him. It's not a nice place. And usually, ideas come to me in pieces. In fact, I often don't know even the big things when I start a story. I believe it's my job to dig and find out what happened. But stories like "Mags," "Angel Of," and "Testify," they just came to me complete in a single thought. And that scares me. My friend Jon suggests that I write more of that world. I will some day. Maybe soon. I had to revisit that world tonight. I retold the stories for a friend who hasn't read them. So maybe a new story will come to me for that world. Though, I hope it waits until tomorrow. I need to sleep. The spellcheck here suggested "magi" for "Mags." That has freaked me out. Read the short story to see why. "Mags" and "Angel Of" can be read at Under The Moon or Devil's Advocate. Click the links and seek. Saturday, October 11, 2003
The LindowsOS Linux Operating System Homepage
Here's Lindows, a good place to start for transition from M$ to Linux. Some have complained that Lindows mimics Windows too much. But it is just a mask on top of Linux. You pull the fancy KDE Windows Themes back, you see Linux underneath, and that means stability and security the likes of M$ has never seen.
Mandrake Linux - Friendly Linux operating system for both servers and desktop
Here's Mandrake Linux. This is what I use. I did my time in M$ world. Linux isn't easy. But after time, I learned how things work in Linux. And it really does make sense here. Also, there are a ton of Distros of Linux for folks who aren't fluent in Linux. Lindows for example. I do believe that any of the modern major distros of Linux start out newbie/user friendly.
Devil-Linux
I am a Linux user. I use Mandrake. I'm up to 9.1, and I'm waiting for 9.2. I have not used Devil Linux. While I just like the name, I'd recogmend almost any version of Linux over any M$ OS.
I got some new CDs today. Finally, I have the latest A Perfect Circle album. I haven't listened to it much yet. But I can see why some folks don't like it. It is not a heavy followup to the first album. There's a new lineup for the band and new style. And it is not "Tool-Lite" either. Tool might be my favorite band depending on the day. A Perfect Circle is up there.
Speaking of somebody's who's also up there for me, Beth Orton. I have some new Beth Orton stuff to listen to. There sure have been a cluster of releases from her lately. I don't have the remix disc, but I do have Pass in Time. Maybe her first album will be re-released soon. But I can't help but to think the recent release are just ways for the music label to make a quick buck on somebody who is gaining fame in the US. Should I really complain? Nope. Release everything. Let the fans decide. Superglue does not stick to superglue. That, dear readers, is a very cruel, inside joke. I may pick up that Beth Orton remix album tomorrow, fill out the collection a bit more. I've been waiting for the 2004 Short Story and Writer's Market to come out. It is supposed to be out in October, which is now! But yet nothing. I need that book. I probably should just pre-order and wait. I hate waiting. One time... I ordered a special edition Night of the Living Dead DVD for $6. It never came, and I forgot about it. Over a year, more than 365 days, it came in the mail. I was lucky to have the $6 in the bank. And when I got it, it was a two disc, really special, numbered edition DVD. Though some may say it's crap, but I like it. There are two versions of the movie, both remastered, and one with extra footage shot for the anniversary. The extras included documentaries, behind the scenes, trailers, and so on and so on. All I had to do to get is wait a year. So maybe I should wait about this and that sometimes.
I've corrected some things on the Bio page of my site, Under The Moon. I can never get Neil GaimAn's name right.
Also, there's a new link to Hopeful Sinner, a Charlie Terrell site. I built Hopeful Sinner for a friend. Charlie Terrell is from Alabama as well. He's a musician and artist that's... well, go to the link section and click the link. You need to see. Friday, October 10, 2003
It's slowly raining outside. Not nearly enough to be good sleeping rain, but it's there, spattering and popping. Good sleeping rain is heavier with boom and rubble thunder but not cracking thunder. It's been a long time since there's been good sleeping rain here.
Down the street Henry's gas station is open. I couldn't tell you the name of it. That changes every month. But for more than 20 years, it's been owned by a guy named Henry Morgan. Henry isn't liked in Dora. Many years ago, one of his employees shot a cop, and Henry paid for his lawyer. I'm sure there are more reasons, but that's all I know. It's weird. The day of the shooting is one of my most vivid memories. I remember the night before on an episode of Miami Vice, somebody had put a horse's head in somebody's bed. Yeah, I know that's from the Godfather, but they did it on Miami Vice as well. And I was only a kid. I had nightmares about it. And the next day after I'd taken a bath, I looked out the window and saw a horse's head on the side of the road. I kept telling my mom about it, and she kept telling me to stop with the nonsense. Finally after enraging her, she got up and looked. She then panicked a bit and called the police. It wasn't a horse's head. It was one of Dora's police officers. He's been shot and lay on the side of the road bleeding to death. He didn't die. And he did return to being a police officer. His name was Steve, and he was shot with his own gun. The guy who shot him worked for Henry Morgan and so on and so forth. He did not get off and went to the big house. Still, the damage was done for poor Henry. It's strange to see Henry's gas station open now. For the last few months, it's been closing early. For awhile, it was an all night place. It is the only thing open in Dora right now. The only thing. Thanks to the Wal-mart up the highway, now even our Food World closes at night. There really should be a town where there's nothing but night people. Day people have no consideration for night people. Most daywalkers think there's something wrong with night people. So, there should be towns and small cities that can function at night. Stores would be open, not just food and gas stations, but shoe shops and hot dog stands. And there'd be a city park with fountains and schools both elementary and high school. Buses. Trains. Garbage men every Tuesday night. Could you imagine ending your day with a sunrise? Most sunsets to me are muggy, too bruised. A sunrise is crisp and sharp, a nice thing to see before sleep. The rain is picking up here. Maybe it is sleeping rain. Maybe it is. Thursday, October 09, 2003
I just finished watching To Hell and Back on AMC. To Hell and Back stars Audie Murphy and is the true story of... Audie Murphy. I'm not sure how much is truth and Hollywood. And you can spot the "Hollywood" in the movie. Most if it is understandable. Back in 1955 you couldn't really show war as it really is. They used Hollywood elements, themes, and tricks to tell the story.
I enjoyed the movie. I'm a WWII person. After reading up on To Hell and Back, I was hoping for something a little more. But overall I'm happy I watched it. It did ring a little more true and have a deeper story than most war movies including some modern ones. My favorite war movie is really a miniseries, Band of Brothers. If I get started on that one I'd never stop. AMC is one of my favorite TV channels. TV usually isn't any good. It's not. It's quick fixes for the numb and dumb. I'm not going to lie and say I don't need quick fixes ever now and then. That's why one of my other favorite channels is Comedy Central. But AMC is quickly becoming a necessity for me. I'm starving for a good movie. Hollywood doesn't like making good movies because they're usually not universally appealing and thus can't make as much money as the normal crapy they churn out. I'm so hungry for a good movie I'm digging back through history trying to find something... anything. I've found some gems and some of them are finally coming to DVD, Scarface for example. I wish I could afford the Godfather DVD boxset. I don't want to buy just the Godfather. I want the whole series even through 2 and 3 (everybody tells me 3's no good but I don't remember enough to judge) aren't as good as the 1st one. And with the season, I'm hungry for a good horror movie as well. House of a 1,000 Corpses was... well, ever seen Texas Chainsaw Massacre (not the new one)? Tuesday, October 07, 2003
The Bucs were robbed. How can one jump up, come down, brush up against another player on your own team, and have that called a personal foul?
Even though I was for Bucs, I still love the Colts. And tonight's game that lasted into the morning hours in over time, was an amazing game. 38 - 35 Colts over Bucs in overtime. Monday, October 06, 2003
I've added links to the blog. I couldn't figure out how to add them through Blogger so I had to find somewhere in their code to slip them in. Hopefully, they look okay where they need to.
Tonight the Colts and Bucs play. I love both teams. But after last week's shaming of the Saints, I wouldn't mind if Tampa reminds the Colts what it's like to loose. Though, I fear the Colts have the advantage with their coach being the Bucs old coach. Recall. I'm torn. Over all, a recall is probably a bad thing. It costs too much money. It creates chaos. It sets up lots of bad thing in the future. Then again, it's great entertainment if you're a news junkie. And I am. I feel guilty for sitting back and watching. And you know it won't be over tomorrow, the day of the vote. That would be too simple.
Well, I think I've figured out thing posing-wise. But there are some margin issues I'm still working on for the Blog.
Other than the Blog, everything else is up and working. The site is a cleaner version of the flash version with some of the stlye of the old Under The Moon html version. I think this will work better for me. I love flash. It is hard to work with sometimes, but that's why I'm not using it anymore. Most folks do not have the latest badass computer. I don't even have that. I just have something that'll do most things. Most folks don't. So, I'm going with something that I hope most folks will be able to see and read with as little problems as possible. I worry about bandwidth. The first version of Devil's Advoce (another site I designed) was heavy in webterms. It was for broadband. I made the mistake of thinking that if you put a "Loading..." animation that people will wait 30 seconds for an image. It doesn't work like that. People, even on broadband, want thing now. So, I've worked really hard since those first days of DA to make things small. I love to just use text and push it around a bit. I now have the ablity to take an image and run it through Adobe's Image Ready. Image Ready can take a 30K image and make it 15K, a 10K and make it 1K. That's a key to my webwork these days. 800 x 600. I hate 800 x 600, but more than half the people surfing the web are running their monitors at 800 x 600. I run at 1152 x 864 on both my 19 inch monitors (I dual monitor). I have to design for 800 x 600 or everything I do looks wrong. I hate to scroll sideways and so do most folks. Imagine only seeing half a site. You'll come away thinking that site sucked. So I take 800 x 600 in mind. The new Under The Moon site, like all of my sites these days, does that. However, I push it to the very edge. And in one or two spots, I tend to go over my 800 x 600 margins but usually it's something that's not that important to using and enjoying the site. For example, a small graphic may get cut off, but never any text of anything. At least, this is what I try to do. I make tons of mistakes. Anyway, I've still go some work to do to shape this Blog. But the site is up and the Blog is part of it. I hope to post often and actually get back into Blogging. I used to have a Blog that I posted to every day for a year. That's 365 posts in a row. I had to do all the html coding by hand. And back then, it wasn't called Blogging or a Blog. I called it an Online Journal. Oh well. That's for another day. I've got a tad bit or webwork left and then some writting. Maybe it'll rain like promised. Sunday, October 05, 2003
I've uploaded a newly redesigned verion of my site, Under The Moon. This is really a test post as I intergrate this Blog.

Getting Involved with mozilla.org
If you're using Internet Explorer, you've got holes. Most are known. Some are not. Chances are, you haven't patched the ones that are known about. Check out Mozilla. Give it a chance. Check out Firebird, which I still call Pheonix. Firebird is a cleaner, faster version of the Mozilla browser, which is already clean and fast. I'm actually testing out the "Blog This" extention I've added to Firebird. From now on when I'm at a site I'd like to Blog about, I just have to right click. Thursday, October 02, 2003
It is October. This is my favorite time of the year. I'm not in the best mood or health these days, but if anything will spin my bottle it'll be the fall. Fall started for us a few days ago. When you go from 88 to 74, 70 to 46, the season has changed even if not by some calendar. You just have to listen to the trees and the grass. They'll tell you all about the weather if you have the time to sit and listen. You'd be surprised what they can tell you.
NOVEMBER COMING FIRE. My birthday is in November. I'm almost finished with the revamp of my site. I've taken the flash and older HTML version and pushed them together. They didn't want to go, but I had my way with them, leaving them tired and defenseless. Soon, this Blog will be part of it and the site will be up and out. The Blog is oddly one of the last things needing to be worked on. Originally, this Blog went up blue and orange named Myself and the Hidden Around Me. Now it's black and white and called One drink too many and a joke gone too far. That may change before sunset. Most things do. "Send Lawyers, Guns, and Money. The shit has hit the fan." Hey, Dilbert is about to come on. I think I'll watch that. |

From a Hole in the Sky 13 Stories of Horror, Madness, and Religion make up this dark-kudzu collection. A city run by angels with demanding burial rites. A white van jostling with clowns and warnings about sleep. A weeping pastor with a dead man in a boat. Homicide, Suicide, Jesus, and The Devil. To join a family, you're going to need some stitches. Kids today on their way to cut grass and play cowboys and injuns'. A hole in the ground where poor John Henry met a foul ending. And unholy birthing machines with a chosen one. All this and more. Where do bad things come from? They come FROM A HOLE IN THE SKY. The Alabama Weather Blog A blog of the current forecasts, watches, and warnings for the state of Alabama. The posts are automatically generated from E-forecast and E-warn e-mails from my local ABC Network Affiliate, ABC 33/40. The images are from the National Weather Service. The site will refresh itself every ten minutes. |
