LinuxPlanet - Reviews - Mandrake Is On The Move - What's New
This is a very nice review of Linux Mandrake 10 Community. And today, I received an e-mail from Mandrake that says that Mandrake 10 Official is coming in May, which is sooner that expected. Monday, March 29, 2004
I think I have a fever.
I'm feeling kind of low. The birds are too loud this night. The gas station down the road -- the one usually closed at night -- is open to business right now at 2 am. I bite my nails too much. I wish I had Duckman on DVD. I saw the movie Holes. Ice melts too fast. The church sign down the road is too bright. I want to build my own submarine. I enter too many contests. No, I loose at too many contests. That's it. I'd love a new mattress, but not one of those Tempur-Pedic ones. Foam, any kind, bothers me. It will rain. Yeah. Saturday, March 27, 2004
It has just been one of those weeks.
I was thinking earlier that I haven't had any time to play Icewind Dale II or Morrowind. I purchased these several months ago. If it wasn't already too late, and I didn't have some sketches to do, I might think about playing one of them. Sketches... I'm going to do some sketches for "W. T." The Movie. The time to do the storyboards is almost here. Thursday, March 25, 2004
EU slaps record fine on Microsoft - News - ZDNet
M$ has been a bad boy... again. European Union has ruled they're unfair and must pay a record $613 million dollars and change the way their software works. Will they? Probably not. Wednesday, March 24, 2004

I just printed the first draft my screenplay for "W. T. for Short." Joy. Now I must edit. I can't wait to get this finished. Next, I'm doing storyboards. Oh my.

I just finished Ira Levin's ROSEMARY'S BABY. Boy oh boy. The pre-partum and post-partum crazies are a bitch.
It was a long week. Productive, but long.
My short story "Testify" is getting ready to go out into the world, maybe find a home somewhere. I've got a new OS. Mandrake Community 10 is out for all. Community is not a final version, nor is it a beta or release candidate. It's just a working, stable version that needs to be polished. This way instead of releasing 10 and then in a few months having to release 10.1 that has some bug fixes and requested changes (sometimes new ideas such as an innovative menu system doesn't go over well and has to be changed), Community comes out and later in the year, a Final version comes out. Things are different, some good and some not so good. The not so good first. I had the same menu problem I had with 9.2 in KDE (my preferred windows manager{the interface}). It wasn't hard to fix. I just thought Mandrake had fixed it. There is no native DVD support. That's not Mandrake's fault. But still, I'd like to see a distro take the lead and legally push for it. I bought the DVD legally. I should be able to play the DVD legally on my computer. I couldn't change skins in Xine (my preferred video program that, once enabled, plays DVDs). I think this is more of a Xine problem than Mandrake. I downloaded a newer release candidate version of Xine and installed it. I was able then to change skins. No skins available for Mplayer (my preferred generic video program). I had to download skins for it. Again, probably not a Mandrake issue, just Mplayer's. Karamba had issues. I use Superkaramba, which I think of as Karamba with extras. They're basically the same. I had to modify something in its source code and then compile it to fix it. Karamba always stayed on top of everything. This means if I moved a window over it, I couldn't see some of the window. Karamba and Superkaramba are third party programs that have nothing to do with Mandrake. This isn't a bug, but I'd love Mandrake to think of dual monitor folks. Their screensavers rarely work right. More likely than not, this a Gnome and KDE issue. KDE plays pretty nice with dual monitors. I just wish they're screensavers did. Now for the good. Speed. Mandrake 10 is fast. It is much faster (to me) than 9.2. The speed practically negates the bad. My web browser (Firebird) and mail client (Thunderbird) work beautifully and with some speed. True Type fonts are turned on by default it seems. That's a huge plus. Sound is turned on by default. I didn't have go turn the volume up on anything. It's all set right for me. In all previous versions of Mandrake I've tried, the sound was always turned down by default. There are a few extras and improvements in the way you can configure your desktop, the look, feel, and sound. You now can easily install KDE splash screens. They're defined as splash themes. One of them mysteriously looks Redmond (M$). There are a lot of little touches that make everything nice. A few of them really do make you think the folks at Mandrake are listening to end users. Imagine that. This is by no means a review of Mandrake 10. This is merely a "what's up with me" post. Head over to www.distrowatch.org and check out their Mandrake section for a listing of reviews. While there, check out other distro. It's all good. Wednesday, March 10, 2004
I just finished another scene in the screenplay I'm working on. I'm turning one of my short stories, "W. T. for Short" into a screenplay. The process is still a bit awkward to me, but it is getting easier. The thing that strikes me most odd right now is that I'm having to do everything in present tense, and I mostly write in past tense.
Another odd thing, most of the writers I read today write in present tense. I prefer past tense. This happened opposed to this is happening. But that is just me. Wait. But that was just me. That's better. Monday, March 08, 2004
I just finished watching ADAPTATION. That movie helps.
I'm slowly making progress on my screenplay, "W. T. for Short." I have a short story (still doggedly un-named) in the making that takes priority over the screenplay, but I am getting things done. I'm very tempted to write myself a part in the screenplay. It's based on this and that from my life. So why shouldn't I have a larger role in it? Right now, the screenplay is growing. I'm adding more to it than was in the short story it's based on. More likely than not, I'll just go back to the short story and add things. I'm really learning a lot from this. And if I can pull this off, I'm going to take other works, turn them into screenplays, turn them into films. Sunday, March 07, 2004

How come every time you see rebels taking over a third world country, they're in the back of a Isuzu pickup truck?

Today I started my first screenplay. No joke. I'm not really sure what I'm doing. But that's okay. It is a learning experience at the least. I'm taking my short story "W. T. for Short" and turning it into something. Hopefully, in a little bit, it'll be screenplay.
Also, today, I saw what I'm assuming to be the latest Blink 182 video. I see they want to be The Cure now. Joy. Edwards is dropping out of the race. Kerry seems to be the one shot the Democrates have. I hope he makes it. Bush is horrible. |

Buy my book.
From a Hole in the Sky 13 Stories of Horror, Madness, and Religion make up this dark-kudzu collection. A city run by angels with demanding burial rites. A white van jostling with clowns and warnings about sleep. A weeping pastor with a dead man in a boat. Homicide, Suicide, Jesus, and The Devil. To join a family, you're going to need some stitches. Kids today on their way to cut grass and play cowboys and injuns'. A hole in the ground where poor John Henry met a foul ending. And unholy birthing machines with a chosen one. All this and more. Where do bad things come from? They come FROM A HOLE IN THE SKY. The Alabama Weather Blog A blog of the current forecasts, watches, and warnings for the state of Alabama.
